Making their directorial debut, writing duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Horrible Bosses) also share a love for the original Vacation and during a break from filming, Goldstein described the new film as “a balance of homage and respect for the original, but making it our own and making it something that will work for this generation and those who haven't seen the original.”Įxplained Daley, “New Line wanted to bring this thing back to life, and we figured it would do the franchise justice to bring Rusty back to Walley World, where it all started.” Goldstein noted, “It was never pitched to us as a remake. Okay, sure Walley World was really Six Flags Over Georgia…* but still! There was the new generation of Griswolds, led by a grownup Rusty (Ed Helms)! And based on the conflict the Griswolds were having with another family (led by Office Space's Ron Livingston) as they tried to board a rollercoaster, Rusty's luck when it came to vacations was as terrible as his father's.
